OUT OF THIS WORLD

[RADIO-SERIES]

[Pittsburgh Press, April 9, 1944—“New Horror Show Is Plain Scary”]

“Usually most radio programs end happily with boy getting girl, or girl getting boy, or the villain

getting his just deserts. But what of a radio program where ALL the characters die at the end?

“Or what of a program where one of the characters is able to remove his soul from his body and

send said soul floating through the barriers of time and space? Or—

“Well, a program built around such ideas is actually going on the air next Wednesday. It will be

a real chiller-diller, with vampires, ghouls, and all the elements of the supernatural. It’s not a

mystery show; there are no mysteries to be solved and easily explained. It’s plain downright

horror, reminiscent of the old and popular ‘Lights Out’ show.

“As an example of the production problems involved in the show, take the one of sound.

Supernatural stuff requires some supernatural sound effects. How would you get the exact sound

of an electric drill cutting into a human skull? What would a voice sound like that came, not from

a human throat, but from a machine? What sounds do sharks make when they swim? KDKA’s

sound engineers are getting a rather harassed look about them as they try to solve some of these

sound problems.

“In keeping with its theme, the program goes on the air at an hour when the kiddies and faint-

hearted are safely in bed. Titled, ‘Out of This World,’ the new program starts over KDKA next

Wednesday at midnight. The scripts are by David Lewis; production by Lionel Poulton.”
