During William Spier’s years as producer-director of the CBS anthology series Suspense, there
was an actual written dictum which stated—unequivocably—that the show did not do—and was
not interested in doing—stories of horror or supernatural menace. How then to account for the
fact that during those same years some of the program’s most memorable episodes were chillfests
and Gothic ravers like Lucille Fletcher’s “Fugue in C Minor,” W. F. Harvey’s “August Heat,” and
H. P. Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror”?
